is the SRAM chip totally unemulatable on current units? Is it just too big for current units, and it will be solved in next gen units or are there actual protections involved?
In addition, i was wondering if any unit vendor can make a special memory bank dedicated to saving (5 megs worth)

You are probably confused: the SRAM chip is emulated directly by the
Z64, and requires just a small piece of hardware on the CD64, V64 and
V64jr (the DS1)

The SRAM chip is 32kbytes. There's a new kind of "data-save" chip,
that probably uses FLASH technology instead of SRAM. This chip is not
currently emulated, mostly because is used by just a few of games.

5 megs of SRAM are probably much more than you're willing to pay...
Anyway all the copiers do offer some way to save/reload the SRAM and
EEPROM contents: this may be authomatic (Z64) manual (CD64) or needs
some 3rd party software...
