All those mothers were right it seems, as Nintendo has reportedly agreed that their games can cause physical harm to users. The game in question is Mario Party, and the problem was in the sub-games where players are required to gyrate the joypad joystick as fast as possible for maximum points. The result was that some players were getting friction burns, cuts, bruises and lacerations from their manipulations.
Nintendo has agreed to provide up to four pairs of protective gloves to every single owner of Mario Party - reportedly around 1.2 million people, though only if the game owners ask Nintendo themselves. The agreement is part of a settlement with the New York state Attorney General and could cost Nintendo up to US$80 million dollars. While no case has actually been filed yet, the New York Attorney General's office has received approximately 100 complaints from consumers who sustained injuries ranging from friction burns and blisters to lacerations and punctures.
