Seeing you can only buy a z64 new these days there isn't much choice.

Why not buying a CD64 ??
I hadn't had any problems with getting games to run. With the latest LaC BootEmu you can play nearly everything.
Only problem : only 256 mbit

You might as well want to buy a Z64, The only problem the Z64 had in my opinion was that the storage capactity was a bit low and loading times weren't that fast either... , well, following the instructions in the bios mania section here on Dextrose I now got an old harddisk working on my Z64 http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif Loading times are now about 30 secs for Perfect Dark which is significant faster than with the old Zip100 http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif You can also still use the Zip and that's nice for testing new games to get them working before you decide to put them on your HD. With harddisk support the Z64 is in my opinion the best N64 backup unit http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/wink.gif
