i came across a interesting article today about nintendos plans to allow gamers to play nes games on the n64 through the 64dd. nintendo released this information shortly after segas plans to allow dreamcast users to play megadrive/genesis and pc engine games on dreamcast heres the page i come across.
http://headline.gamespot.com/news/99_12/21_vg_dlnes/index.html

i was thinking that it would be great if a coder could get hold of the emulator nintendo speak of and allow us gamers the option to play the games through our trusty back up units.
cheers.

Nintendo do have a NES emulator already, it is embedded into ExciteBike64. The same goes for the GB in Pokemon Stadium.

When I was looking into producing a LaC-stylie crack for Pokemon Stadium (save to SRAM) I managed to patch the GB emulator to play any game (it checks the header of the GB cart in the GBpak before it loads), and I tried a few different games (tetris mainly tho) they all seemed to work fine.

If anyone is really bored have a look through the ROM of pokemon stadium for "POKEMON BLUE" or "POKEMON RED" and you will find a couple of references, this is the part where it checks the GBpak's header.

I've not heard anything about Nintendo starting the Download NES games service in Japan, but there again, we did'nt hear that much about the DreamCast thing either. so who knows.

Do you honestly think Nintendo is still going to release the 64DD (officially anyway)? They anounced it, what, 100 years ago? And it's no closer to being released now than then. They should have released the 64DD a LONG time ago, but since they didn't, and with the Dolphin on the horizon, it would be just stupid of them to still release it now.

But oh well... http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

This would be wicked man! I've been looking for some way of playing all my nes roms. I can't get used to playing them on my PC via emu......

Im not sure what you mean Paul. The DD has actually been released, but only in japan. Then again I assume you mean US and europe? And in that case, your right, we'll probably never see it outside japan.

i thought that nintendo were releasing this emu to play through the dd because there would be no other way they could distribute games on the net for a cartridge based system. so i came to the conclusion that having a back up unit may allow us to use the emu and nes rom without the dd.
or maybe the emu is coded so that it needs the dd hardware to work, i don't know much about this stuff but i hope that a coder could hack the emu and make it work for v64.

Excitebike64 Also has a NES emulator in it. But the NES rom format they used looked a little different. But i'm guessing one could patch the game to run ANY nes game.

Yeah, I meant it wouldn't be released in our neighborhood (outside Japan)...Even though it did so well over in The Land of the Rising Sun, it sold how many units? 3 I think? Hehe... http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

But anyways, this subject has been touched off and on, but I'm still wondering why you guys don't like playing the Emu's and games on your computers? Is it because of the controllers? If so you can get adapters to let you use N64, Playstation, NES, and SNES controllers for your PC. But I think the PC emulators play the games just fine, or do you guys have like old 286's that won't even run the emu's? Hehe...But oh well, whatever floats your boat I guess. http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/biggrin.gif But I will say playing N64 games on your PC just sucks, because only a few games are supported and it's not 4 player capable...

Anyways, forgot what else I was going to say... http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

I would rather play console games on a console (/tv). So the idea of an emulator that might work for the N64 to play NES or gameboy games correctly is just a great idea.

I would guess that the 64DD (it doesn't matter how many times I read that...somehow an insane bra size always comes to mind) NES emulator will only accept special NES ROMs downloaded from nintendo (at first, ofcourse).

It might be easier to turn that into an emulator as the Excitebike64 NES emu may only support Excitebike for the NES and a few others.

Like, *dont look at me* isn't going to draw attention to yourself.

How do they plan on getting these ROMs from the net onto the DD disks?

maybe the dd has a port to link to pc nintendo may have thought of the idea of pc dd link so that users can upload saved tracks for f zero etc so that people can download and try out customised tracks. i don't see how else it could be done.

The 64DD comes with a modem cartridge (you know, Randnet? I think it's called that).
