Oh crap! I just saw the machine and controller. They have pics of it already on tendobox, the machine *is* a cube (in the worst possible sense). It comes in five colours - including PINK! It looks like the mini-DVD drive is housed on top and you have to LIFT the lid manually to put the media in. As for the controller - I don't even know where to start - it looks like you can 'fold' parts of it so you can switch between D-pad and analogue - I don't see any major innovations in design yet except making it more difficult to use. So far the visual appeal of both console and controller is quite simply replusive. Anyone else? Or am I alone?

Info at this site: "Note: Actual system colors are not final and are subject to change." *hoping*

I supose that button marked "eject" is just for show then?

I actually like the look of the thing, I like the nice SGI blue shade they have, Im not too sure about the big white lump on the front of it, or that strange looking black handle on the back.

If they made it black it'd look like a Saturn.

Personally, I think the cube itself is very ugly looking. It reminds me of a Borg ship but no where near as cool. The controller also looks ugly and akward. I have to admit being very dissapointed when I first saw it this morning.
THEN. I saw the screenshots of Luigi and Zelda! OH. MY. GOD!
Who cares that it looks like a brick if this is what it can do!

I saw it the other way round, so I was happy then depressed beyond belief.

itll be distracting when you are playing the games- a big flourescent fuck off box in front of the telly - looks like you'll have to cover it with a brown paper bag as not to upset any visitors http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/biggrin.gif least you can use the handle to thro' it against the wall !!!

Hehehe...

I think this cube thing will turn out alright, they say it will come in a variety of colors and even if not, the pinkish colored one looks fine to me. Like RedboX said, I like the SGI look.

And those screenshots are just plain awesome!!

The controller looks a bit wierd, but that's what everyone said when the N64 ones came out and in my opinion they are by far the best controllers available on any console.

If only Nintendo can get those heavy-hittin' developers back on their side (like SquareSoft) I think this cube will be the best of the next gen. systems. </optomism>

They should have called it the Nintendo 32 :-)

The handle is there because the cube doubles as a lunch box, nintendo thought it would be good P.R if kids took it to school with them and showed it off to other kids during lunch time and recess...

Well I just thought I would say, when I first saw the machine and controller it was on Tendo Box and all I had to go from was the digital camera shot of both items on a projector at Spaceworld (I could not see the eject button, but it looked like it had a lip to lift with). Once I saw the rendered version it looked a damn sight better. I still would have liked a more futuristic 'look' to the machine but its the inside that counts and it looks like its doing darn well in that department.

I'm still unsure about the controller. Knowing Nintendo I guess it will be comfortable although no one can really say how good it is untill they have used it. Thankfully someone has finally listened and made official wireless controllers! Is it me or are the wireless ones kinda different from the cable ones? Its has also been suggested that since the connector on the new controllers seem identical to the N64s, we may be able to use our existing controllers. (Would be nice not to have to buy 3 new controllers for multiplayer games).

But here is a question more relevant for dextrose... we all know that the machine uses 8cm mini-DVDs and I think I read that it won't play audio cds, but can you fit and read a normal size cd?

reminds me of a large dc, but nintendo is taking an exact opposite system design to the ps2. Instead of being a small, svelte black system, the n cube is big n' white. I don't mind that too much, but the controllers have gotta go! I hope we can use our old n64 controllers on them because they look terrible! God please let them be prototypes, because I don't have the dexterity to play with that. Damn gaming arthritis is creeping up.

Why everyone is bitching about the "system design" I thinks it looks pretty good. If you carry a stack of 10 pack blank CD jewel cases, and look all around dimension, that's how big the system is. It's very compact and comes in different colors so you have more choices. And ovar all what makes a good game system? The games. They have Metroid, Wave Race, Mario, Too Human, and many other. Remember it was only a pre-show presentation. Tommorrow we might see some Konami, Capcom, and Namco's games. The controller looks pretty good too. I mean back when N64 first showed off, everyone said samething. But once you get that thing in you hand and feel it, I bet most will deffinatly like it. Remember it's made by "gaming god" Shagiru Miyamotto. I think Nintendo is in pretty good shape and have good future ahead of them.

Dudes, I rarely post. But this is an ocassion.

Nintendo is doing one thing none of the other console companies are, they're directing ALL of their effort to gaming. Not a set top box approach, not an online behometh machine, but clearly a software only platform.

The design is made to be portable. Look at the positioning of the vents. This is so that you can take it to your friends and sit it on the carpet, or put it anywhere you saw fit without risking damaging the motherboard.

It's only 4.3 inches high! My god. Think about that! Many of your guys have dicks bigger than this thing. (I know I do!) It's smaller than an average sized mouse pad. It's the most inconspicious little thing you will EVER own.

It has an HDTV (digital) output for supremely crisp pictures, even the PS2 can't say it has that.

I want to call names, because I despise superficial observations like the ones I've seen in this post. How can you possibly condem a controller because of how it LOOKS? Are you a fucking moron? I bet you too, were also one of those idiots who looked at the N64 controller and scoffed, only to embarassingly admit that your original opinion was unvalidated once you used it.

Just be sure to yell at Nintendo when The Cube comes out priced at less than $120. Because it will.

Think about that, you can something as powerful as the new Mac G4 Cube for ten thousandths of the price. Yeah baby.

I think the I will eventually get the Nintendo Cube because i have always been loyal to Nintendo.
I can still remember getting the nes, super nes, and n64. Nintendo has always had the better controller and will continue to.
The smaller the game machine the better it is plus it is what inside that counts. Also simple design means cheaper to make.
I just hope i can "backup" all the games. http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hah nah I am saying that controller looks shite, the buttons don't seem to be in a natural place and the A Button is HUMUNGOUS man, and it does look like you have to move your thumb too far around so it'll hurt more. Knowing Nintendo they've done a good thing, but then still ppl want a comfortable way to play fighting games. And anyway, no, I wasn't one of the ppl that said the N64 controller looked crap, coz I hope you can use the N64 controller on this machine coz personally I think it'll be a lot more comfortable to use and considering they have the same amount of buttons and features apart from the C-stick, then hopefully you can use the old controls.

No! NO! For the love of all that is good and true, no! You did not just compare a Nintendo product to a Mac did you?! I though you liked the N-Cube? And here you are slandering Nintendo's good name...*tsk* *tsk*...

Hehe, Macs are the stupidest peices of junk ever created, except those who use them. http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/wink.gif But that discussion is for a completely different forrum.

Back to the N-Cube, it does have a modem expansion slot, used for a 56k modem or their Network card thingy-majigger for broadband connections, their has yet to be a console to succesfully make the online transition though, can Nintendo do it? Probably not, hehe, but eveything I've read and seen about it points "WOW", this system is going to be awesome all around, I'm confident that the controller you're all bashing will be great to, they wouldn't make a controller that wasn't comfortable, it's Nintendo! The only problem I see is that they didn't just go with the full DVD medium, but hopefully this Mini-DVD stuff will turn out to be just fine.

I read this morning that everyone who has actually felt/tried the gamecube controller liked it a lot.

However, the interesting news was that the exact design/features of the controller were not finished. Now although I am sure that the controllers layout will not change there are apparently extra features that will not be revealed until nearer launch to avoid the competition from stealing ideas.

An example of this could be motion sensing technology - since Nintendo registered a patent for this over 6 months ago

it definately grows on u thats for sure... its not curvy like the n64 at all, but I had no idea it was that small! I was a little groggy last night so I never took a look at the specs. Maybe it will have a good launch, because right now, in America and Japan, the ball is in nintendo's court. The psx2 and dc are all but dead in japan and the dc is floundering over here because there is no new software around. Christmas season may change this, but the only way for the cube to do good is to have a righteous launch.

Correct. If you got the hardware, then FLAUNT it. If they launch it properly with loads of developer support then the NGC will storm the markets, and put nails in the coffins of both the playwithmyselfstation2 and the wetdreamcast. If nintendo can price the games a little cheaper than current, (the DVD media will cost less to produce) it will encourage parents to choose it over the competition for christmas presents, which will mean the traditional PSX will get put in the loft where it belongs. http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

dont talk like that !
anyhows anybody whos dreaming that ninty will lower the prices has another thing coming - theyll just recooperate all the money they lost through N64, oh and another thing shigs said that with the media saving they can start including game specific controllers with each game - so no dont expect any cheaper prices at all - dont trust ninty ....
