I'm willing to buy a backup device, but I'd like to know which one is better and why. Which of the latest games are playables without patching or cracking. Name devices... I know my decision will be between Z64 and V64 so "throw me a freaking bone here"; I say http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
thanks.

Nowadays you should buy only a v64jr 512 Mbit... all the other backup units (Z64 is the best if you own a ZipDrive, choice V64 if you don't have access to a ZipDrive) are not able to play games bigger than 256 Mbit, and so you'll lose all the newest games planed to be relased in the near future (almost all 320 or 512 MB)...

I wouldn´t buy a Dr.v Junior, because you have to boot up your PC every time you want to upload a game. There are only about three games which need 512 MB out yet.
A Dr. V64 is much more comfortable if you own a CD Burner, because you can burn about 40-50 games on one CD and load them through the menu of the Doc.
CD 64 seems to be a cheaper alternative to the Dr.v and doesn´t need cracks, fixes, etc. but I don´t know to much about it.
I think a Z 64 is too expensive http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

whoever boot's up there PC ? just leave it on at all times, and if you run 95,98, 2000 or ME you'd probably need to restart it every other day.
the choice of backup unit is like every other area of different products out there ... it all boils down to personal preferences and choices. you have a PC, EPP 1.9 compliant, in the near vicinity of your n64 you get a v64jr. you have a zip drive and your n64 in the living room ? you get a z64. you like to view VCD's on your tv? get a v64. you want something white? get a cd64.
ok, so i oversimplified it a tad, but just read all the info and posts about the different units and i bet you could make your own decent opinion on what to get.

I have a Z64 and I have enjoyed it thouroughly, in my opinion the best all-around back-up device. But with the new games being greater than 256Mbit the Jr. seems like the logical choice now. ANd about half the price as a Z64.
And it is OK to leave your PC on all the time, especially if you have NT or 2000, they were designed to be on 24/7.

24/7 -- for one week, maybe. MS recommends rebooting at least once a month, but lets not get into that arguement.
I have a server that needs to have a chkdsk ran on it every day or two due to the number and way the files are written (ntfs sucks). the chkdsk takes between 4 and 8 hours (during bootup only). This NT box needs to be up 24/7. ummm, yeah.
i guess that ntfs wasn't designed to deal with a half million plus files daily. http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Being designed for something and actaully doing it are 2 different things...hehe...But yes, the acasional reboot is manditory, especially when it freezes up... http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
You shouldn't have to run chkdsk that often though, even if you do transfer 500,000 files daily...(It's your porn collection isn't it?! http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/wink.gif )

actually, MS recommends it (not that we do it). It has to do with files getting added and deleted in such a way that it makes the binary tree unbalanced.

Id still buy a Z64, then buy those games taht are too big for it. If you buy a JR, assuming you can find one as they aren't sold much anymore, you won't have any more parts or Bios support, I guess.

I used to be handy around here.

if you have a laptop you must buy a V64Jr 512, it's the best choice.
Boot all, play all, save all.
Thanks to EVEK II, you don't even need neither DS1 nor DX256.

Umm, the v64 is white. The cd64 is clear and the old ones were black.
I'm not getting in to which units are better, it's all a matter of opinion, so don't listen to anyone who says 'This unit is the best!', cause it might not be the best for you.
Just to point out some negatives for the units though:
Z64:
-Can't backup 16kbit eeprom and probably never will cause of the next negative.
-Lack of support from manufacturer/BIOS writers.
V64:
-Can't backup 16kbit eeprom or mempaks and can only backup 4kbit eeprom and sram to mempaks.
-No longer manufactured.
CD64:
-Lack of support from manufacturer.
-Some people have had bad experiences with their units (personally, mine has lasted over 2 years).
V64Jr:
-Needs a PC (if you consider that a negative, I personally don't.)
-No longer manufactured.
And no matter what you read, all units except the 512mbit Jr can only support up to 256mbits. And they can't be upgraded either by just putting in more RAM.
How's that for unbiased? http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
