Nope, its true. Go to www.slashdot.org (http://www.slashdot.org) for a link to a direct statement from sega. This is gonna be real lengthy, so stop here if u don't wanna hear what i have to say...
To be honest, I agree CiD because this is going to be one of the greatest things to happen to games. Nintendo and Sega, once two rivals are joining together, to really fight a bigger threat and be kept from becoming extinct. Sony came out, and kicked both of their arse's, not by making superior hardware or software, but by having a better marketing machine and by speaking getting developers to make games . I think that both companies realized this and are not about to let history repeat itself with the ps2 or the even more evil X-Box made by Micro$haft. I personally think that the merger will be great, because they are home to the best software makers and have some of the best second party developers with them too. I can imagine a Yu-Suzuki game and a Shigeru Miyamoto game now! To be honest, Sega had their short trip in the lime-light, but nobody seems to give nintendo credit anymore. The N64 was home to more sleeper hits than any other system, but nobody payed any attention to them. Even though we may all shun emulation, ultimately, it will reveal that the n64 was a pretty decent system that was the yin to the playstation yang.

The reason why I am against this development is because I am affraid Sega's influence will affect Nintendo's games... , Imagine a Sonic walking over your tennis court playing tennis with Mario & Luigi..., I am just affraid that of those two will team up you'll lose the typical Nintendo feeling in their games and I would hate to see that happen http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/frown.gif
I don't see what good Sega has to bring if the companies would team up... , I read somewhere this is their 4th year of loss and they have lost more than 200 million US dollar over the last period, they are losing money on every DC they sell and the piracy is rising like mad on their console the past few months so the profit they make on games is also dropping.
Ok , so they got talented software developpers , well in my opinion they suck as well , I don't like Sega games. They are only fun for 30 mins max and then you already feel the boredom... , but that's just a difference of opinion, a Sega lover would say the opposite...
Personally I would just hate to see it happen http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/frown.gif

there are some validities to your statements, but thats exactly why I think the merger will work well. Remember the old saying "opposites attract"? Thats sega and nintendo. Sega has that edgy, in your face style with quick, simple arcadey games that grab hold of u and get u playing. However, Nintendo tends to stick to the old stylings, shying away from the edgy styling, having terrible advertisements and having lengthy games that may put some gamers off or may not be for the gamer who just wants the quick fix. I can certainly see some creative differences down the road, but that will make things great. Nintendo makes the best 3d adventure titles bar none, while sega makes a damn good racer and has decent sports titles. Also, sega's arcade division rules all it survey's and could probably get nintendo back in the arcades as well.

Some years ago, Sega were loosing money hand over fist, and there was a lot of talk of Bandai buying Sega, but that did'nt happen.
After the saturn died (or was killed) and the PSX had won the "32bit war", most of the industry at the time were saying that sega should stick to what they are good at, and makes games, forget the hardware.
Sega of course decided that they whould produce the Dreamcast, and the rest is as they say history.
I had hoped that this is what this story was getting at, but I should of known better from IGN, it just goes to prove that IGN will print any old rubbish to get thier name about the place.
This story has been repotred all over the internet, and constantly been linked back to IGN, just imagine how much visits IGN will have, and how much more cash they will get from thier sponsers.

Boo! :(
Oh and btw Peach, hard as it may be for N fans to admit, Sega actually makes some pretty good games, the Dreamcast IS actually a bloody good machine, and the reasons they are losing money are... firstly the Saturn was crap at 3D, and that's where the industry went, so the PSX won that bit... Japanese are going to the arcades a lot less than they used to... and this round the IDIOT publishers had no confidence in the Dreamcast, deciding instead that they'd all wait for PS2 like the sad pathetic money-grabbing sheep that they are.

Actually Vertigo , I do have a Dreamcast so I know what i am talking about when I say it sucks http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gifI bought it last year for Soul Calibur only. Haven't played much else on it until the groups started releasing DC images online past June. Since then i've been collecting some more games for it and now have about 45... , however, imho more than 50% is pulp and not even worth a CD-R. Then there are some mediocore games like Crazy Taxi , Silent Scope, Bass Fishing etc. pretty good games but not for longer than 30 minutes cause they get pretty annoying after that period of time. There are only 3 GOOD games i've seen on DC:
* Soul Calibur
* Resident Evil Code Veronica
* Virtua Tennis
Soul Calibur I played to death with a friend, must have been more than 1000 vs matches by now... , it was very cool until we became so skilled at it that we could only kill each other by avoiding each others moves and then counter it.. , we didn't find much fun in that anymore so we quit playing it.
Resident Evil CV was really good, but I finished it in 2 days and never played it again after that... , no need to anyway, if you've finished it , you have seen most of it. You get a 3d mode at the end... , blah.
Virtua Tennis was pretty cool and played it pretty much with friends until Mario Tennis came out, since then I never played Virtua Tennis again since we all liked Mario Tennis better.
So i have no games that I really like to play on my DC and nothing to look forward to in upcoming releases except maybe Daytona and Bleemcast but i don't care to much about those 2 either. I am thinking of selling my DC since it only is gathering dust in my room...
Anyway, this is still just a matter of opinion, If you don't agree I accept that, this is just my opinion I wanted to share with you guys http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
Cid
Tue 31 Oct 2000, 23:02
Sorry, I know it's just a matter of opinion, but I don't buy that. Only 3 good games you say, you've must have downloaded the worst games like Godzilla etc...
The 3 games you mentiod are all good, although I personally think that Soul Calibur is very overrated.
If you like racing games the DC is by far the best choice, and now when Metropolis Street Racer is out there's yet another great racinggame on the DC.
What about Rayman 2, THPS, NFL2K1, NHL2K, MDK2, Soul Reaver, Virtua Fighter 3, Dead or alive 2, all capcom fighters, Ecco, Jet Set Radio or Sonic Adventure just to name some games. Surely you can't think that all of them suck...
Can you honestly say that either Grandia 2, Skies of arcadia, Tony Hawk 2 and Phantasy Star Online holds no interest to you?
And personallay, I find it very hard to belive that a fan of videogames doesn't look forward to Shen Mue. From what I've played of the japanese version it will be a fantastic game...
Anyway, you're ofcourse entitled to your own opinion but I felt that I had to say that anyway...
Peach
Wed 1 Nov 2000, 11:50
Cid, I actually have all the games you mentioned as well, I don't like most of them..
Great racing games... , if you mean F355 or SegaGT I totally disagree..., I found those games very boring right from the beginning.. , but I don't like driving sims very muc, I didn't like GT either. I like racing games but don't want to go trough all that hassle of car settings etc. Racing games I do like are Need for Speed 4 (5 sucked) or Mario Kart 64, great graphics , great control, good music, great gameplay and no hassle with settings & stuff and not dozens of cars to choose from. Metropolis Street Racer could be nice indeed I haven't seen it yet.
Rayman2 is ok, have it for my PC but I rather play Nintendo 3D platformers like Banjo Kazooie or Donkey Kong. I liked Rayman 1 better than 2.
THPS & JSR, i don't like them both very much, I don't like skating or skating games. The music in THPS also gets very irritating after some time ( I am the ambassodor if kick-you-ass-a-dor , lame)
NFL games, well Ice-hockey doesn't interest me at all so neither do these games.
Soul Reaver, I have it for my DC, but I didn't see why people would like it, jump from platform to platform, kill an opponent and suck his soul. I didn't find it very interesting.
Virtua Fighter 3, Personally I think Namco makes the best fighting games and if you compare VF with Tekken, VF blows in my opinion. Very limited amount of moves, not even very interesting moves either. I don't like it very much.
Dead or Alive 2, I really don't understand why people like this game, if there is one game overrated it isn't Soul Calibur but DOA2. In DOA2 you cannot attack constantly but perform a move, block, the other one attacks, you block, you attack again , he blocks or counters, he starts again. You just cannot start and beat till the other one's lifebar is empty like you can with SC or Tekken. Controls aren't very optimal either. Only buttonsmashers I know like the game.
Capcom fighters, they are nice to see if you see the hardcore 2D fighters play it but I rather play 3D fighting games. I liked the old Streetfigher on SNES better till Tekken came out http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
Ecco, it's a beautiful game but gets very annoying after some time. that turtle that has to follow you for example is very frustrating. I also get lost every time I surface and dive back in.
Sonic, it's an ok game, not worth to look back into once you finsihed it. The 1st four levels are pretty good but after that the game kindda dissapoints. Lame storyline & acting in the cutscenes and I didn't like that you had to walk to the levels giving it the "adventure" feel. The should have just given you the levels and play them. avarage game.
Yes I can honestly say i hold no interest towards those games you mention. Tony Hawk is more skating I don't like and for the rest, I only like Nintendo & Squaresoft RPG's but not all of them (I loved FF7 but i hated 8, I loved Chrono Trigger but i didn't like Secret of Mana)
Besides , that online thing is never going to work in Netherlands cause Sega seems to have no interest in our little country, they closed there office here 4 years ago. I like the idea of playing certain console games online though but it just will not happen over here. Only in US, Japan and larger European countries.
Shen Mue, I admit i don't know much about the game except that when you finish it there is no real ending but something that comes down to it that the story will continue in part2 which will take a few years till it arrives, sounds a bit disappointing to me. May be a good game though.
And Peroy I won't deny the N64 doesn't know how to produce garbage as well http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif But i don't really care there aren't coming much new games out for it cause I just play the old ones with friends. And that's probarly the main reason why I like N64. I just love the multiplayer on N64, specially games like Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Star Fox, TWINE, Mario Party or Mario Tennis. I play most of these games every weekend and they are still great games to play http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
No real need to release new games for it cause there already alot of great ones to play already until a another gem comes out, for DC I still have to find a game that is so great in multiplayer you can play it a couple of hours straight with others.
Anyway, I need to check ShenMue & MSR to see if I like them or not and maybe change my thoughts on Sega & DC if i find it good games to play.
I am glad this joint-venture was just a bad translation http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Peroy - I was just thinking the same thing, work out how many games have come for N64, then work out how many you'd actually buy if you didn't have a back-up unit. I don't exactly think we're hitting more than 15% at best here. I'm still wondering how come devco's decide that something as shit as say MK Mythologies or Destruction Derby is worth releasing, it's not like they can really make any money on them is it? I'm glad Gametek went bust though... "Wheel.... Of.... Forchaaaaaaan!!"

Well, I don't get that. Have you played either Skies of arcadia or Grandia 2? They might both suck, but they can also be awesome games. From what I've seen of Skies of arcadia, it seems much more interesting then anything that square has coming, but just because it doesn't say square on the box it will suck? Saying that you only like an rpg made by Square/Nintendo is just stupid.
And about the online thing, you can go online if you just have the dc browser 2.0 and any dial-up of your choice. I live in Sweden (we haven't got the online thing yet either) and I've been playing Quake 3 online the last couple of days. Try it out, and if you have any problems with it, I'll gladly help...

Indeed Peroy, Metroid 128 is something to look really forward to http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
Cid, my expierence is that the best RPG's come from Nintendo or Square. I have played a few RPG's on SNES & Playstation and the only ones I really liked came from Nintendo or Square. (Zelda, Chrono Trigger, MarioRPG & FF7) I am not saying if a game doesn't have a Square logo on it that the game will suck, it can be nice but most of the time they are not much compared to the titles I just mentioned, games that grab you from to moment you start it till you finish it. I also had some a 2CD RPG for Playstation about Mech warroirs & manga cutscenes in it. I can't remember the name right now but I just found it very boring. I played it for 3 days and then I quit cause it couldn't interest me. Same for a game called Alundra or something. Didn't like that one either.
My expierence is that the only RPG's I played and really liked came from Nintendo or Square.
Although I don't like all Square games, I really didn't like FF8 & Parasite Eve.. , still need to check Crono's Cross though, anyone played that yet? is it good?
I can't check the online feature cause my DC hasn't got a modem inside, so I also don't have the web browser + I don't have a private phone line, only cable...
But thnx for the offer http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/wink.gif

Bleemcast should be something just like the BootCD, pop the BleemcastCD in and after it boots insert a Playstation-CD which the bleempack supports. I don't know about those newer games... , perhaps there will be support for some of them, I don't know. It was orginally planned for a release 2 months ago but it still hasn't been released, probarly cause they also want to include those newer games you mentioned and some others like Driver2.
I mailed Bleem about bleemcast and they replied that they weren't sure when it will be released , not even an indication given.
Oh well , I sold my DC yesterday so I don't mind anymore http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
I want to wait for Gamecube too since it's my personal favourite in the new generation consoles but I don't think it will be out here in Europe till late 2001 or 1st quarter 2002... , so chances are I'll buy a Ps2 to keep me busy till Gamecube arrives , not right away when it comes out in 3 weeks though, way to expensive... , I'll probarly wait till february or so when the demand and price have decreased a bit and then maybe buy one second-hand.
I am already looking forward to the hundreds, of not thousands intensive vs-battles I am gonna have in TTT with a good friend of mine http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

aha, so iīm gonna keep my dreamcast and wait for that bleem and maybe thereīll be some good releases on the dreamcast itself. TTT could be a reason to buy ps2 but the price (of ps2) is a joke. and i have a little problem with those beat-em-up-games: i practiced two whole evenings on soul calibur and had a lot of moves, then a friend came with no practice on that games (he donīt even have a console) and kicked the shit outta me just by wild hitting the buttons. hm, doesnīt matter, my favorite multyplayer games are those ones like Goldeneye or twine anyway. itīs just the same there like you with Tekken or SC, we spent months by running thru the temple (Goldeneye) and shooting, stabbing or bombing each other to death.
so i wish a lot of fun with TTT.

Finally another person on the planet that thinks Tekken is crap :)
VF3 just feels soooo much better than Tekken for quite a few reasons, but mostly because Tekken is made up to be so complex, you get to the point where anyone can bash buttons, but VF3 takes a bit of mastering.
As for SF... the king :)
Peach
Mon 6 Nov 2000, 17:18
Tekken complex?
It's actually quite easy, the moves are pretty easy to perform and you find new moves sometimes months after you played it when you thought you had seen it all.
Get to to the point where you can bash buttons?? You sure you're talking about Tekken and not DOA2?
Tekken at least has so much moves you can do endless variations of attacks and drive your opponent insane http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
VF on the other hand is pretty limited in moves and gets pretty predictable because of that. I also played alot of VF against someone but it got pretty boring cause we couldn't do enough varation so almost every attack got blocked unless we performed the same move over and over again which is of course pretty lame.
VF blows compared to Tekken http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nah, DOA is the worst though, it got rave reviews, so I bought it, been collecting dust ever since. PPK, PPPK, KKK, , throw, whoa, explosion.... crap.
And Peachie me old son... *tsk* a common misconception about VF3 is the limited moveset- actually there's hundreds, but since VF3 is a more realistic fighter, you don't *think* there's much of a difference... but there is. OK that was a crap explanation, but hopefully someone will get it http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif. VF3 is also Japan's top 3D fighter BTW.

Seriously, I don't dig realism in games to well , they should still be games and fun to play http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
Vf3 is one of the most realistic fighters but in my opinion that doesn't do the gameplay any good cause the realism makes it to boring. No fun to play cause of the limited amount amount of moves. Yes , there are a wide variety of kicks and punches but what good does it if it doesn't blow your opponent away and he can immediatley counter? Only a few effective moves, the rest are pretty useless. No reward at the end when you finish it, no new modes, stages or characters that come available, only 3 letters you can enter and that's it. The game just reeks of soberness.
Vf was nice till I found Tekken http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

OK here's one... does either of you remember an adventure type game out around the same time where you controlled a ninja, it was sort of 3d engine but not really, and not exactly isometric either, and your health bar was like a square spiral...
that's all I can remember of it, apart from at the very start to get out of the room there was a square on the wall and you had to search it to find a key or something.
Anyone know this one?
Damn I think I just remembered... was this game called Last Ninja 2?
