erm ok franck, well here goes, don't use perfect dark to start off with.
Use a standard game like mario or blast corps or mario kart or any of the standard 6102 boot and 4k eeprom save cartridges you can buy, look aat the list at elitendo.com be aware that the save game on your cartridge will be lost unless you back it up (use one of the eeprom manager programs available on this site and READ the nfo that comes with it)
Right um, you should have got a little black (at least mine is) thing, looks like a cartridge port but it's only about 1 inch high, it fits in the top of your V64 (have to push it in pretty hard) and then sit your N64 on top, take the EXT port off the bottom and make the connection.
So let's do step by step diagram happy together.
[=] <-- Boot cartridge (Mario, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Blast Corps etc)
[ ] <-- Pass-thru adaptor (get with V64)
[N] <-- Your N64
=== <-- Connection adaptor (get with V64)
[V] <-- Your V64
Aight? Now, the pass-thru adaptor looks like one of those universal adaptors to allow you play import games, put your boot cartridge in the top of that adaptor firmly and slot the whole thing in the top of your N64, so essentially your setup look like usual except you have an adaptor between your cartridge and your N64.
Now, get your V64 and find the little thing just look like an edge connector in a plastic case. Push this in the top of your V64, have to be a bit firm but gentle, it takes a tight fit (like all fine things). When it's in good the top of it should be just about level with the case of the V64. Now remove the Expansion cover off the bottom of your N64 and put your N64 on top of the V64 so it look like my pretty picture up the top now. Please make sure it's all plugged in ;)
Don't know how your ariel setup works, I have many slots on my tv so everything can plug in, but you say you run your N64 through the V64. I'm not sure if that works or not, so what I say (I presume you work with AV cable) is this: Put your V64 cable in the Output on V64 and plug to the TV, when you have loaded the ROM, swap the cable in the TV with your N64 one so now your V64 is not outputting video, it is your N64 connect to the TV.
Right so your V64 ariel is in, put in a CD and load your chosen game (preferably choose one that proves to work like a standard game, let's say to make things simple as a test you run Mario64). When it's finished loading, switch your N64 ariel into the TV and turn on your N64. It should now run the game.
Anything more specific questions send them this way to me or anyone else here will be happy to help I'm sure :)

well for tonight i only have perfect dark cartridge, but i think i have one problem with the 256dx game saver (pass thru adaptor)
when i only play my N64 with perfect dark all goes well, but when i put the pass trhu adaptor between my N64 and perfect dark and that i turn on power of N64 i have only a black screen, is it normal ?
it was more easy to use super wild card on snes :-)
and yes i have a little cartridge port on my V64, i must push it hard in some direction before connect my N64 on it or i have to put in my N64 on it pushing pretty hard ?
a 3rd question : is it normal that in all menu of V64 the N64 joypad never works ?

OK... you *must* buy a cartridge, any one with the same territory as the games you want to play, that is standard 6102 boot. Go to elitendo.com and look on the Boot/Save FAQ where it says "Which games boot with 6102 boot chip" Go out and buy one of those games there because then you can play most of the games. Perfect Dark won't make a load of games boot because it uses a different security chip. It won't start with the 256DX connected because the DX256 blocks the Perfect Dark ROM chips, so that the N64 will read the game from the V64 instead.
To connect the V64 to N64 you must check with your V64 must have got a small (maybe 2cm high) connector like a cartridge slot with nothing else stuck on it. You need to put that into the top of the V64 (that's where you have to push a little bit hard) and then put your N64 on top, because of the shape of the V64, the N64 will fit in nicely on top, you don't have to push too hard.
Your last question, yes, the N64 joypad does not work on V64 menu, you have to use the buttons on the front of the V64. This is because the N64 is not switched on and joypads aren't getting power, also because the N64 does not communicate with backup unit in that way, only to read the V64 memory when you load a ROM, so the only way you can move the menu is with the 6 small buttons on the V64 and press Play button to load a ROM.
Does this help?

wow ! you were very fast to answer this time
thanks a lot
i feel better with my dx256 now http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif, so if i have this 3 cartridge : Mario64 PAL, Mario64 JAP, Mario64 US, i should make all the roms work with V64 (epect Resident evil 2 and pokemon stadium), am i right ?
but there is still one thing that i don't understand : "To connect the V64 to N64 you must check with your V64 must have got a small (maybe 2cm high) connector like a cartridge slot with nothing else stuck on it. You need to put that into the top of the V64 (that's where you have to push a little bit hard) and then put your N64 on top, because of the shape of the V64, the N64 will fit in nicely on top, you don't have to push too hard." i don't understand what to do before put my N64 on V64 (may be the small connector is allready on V64 and that i don't know it)
excuse me to annoying you again...

or may be i have not this small connector you are talking about, because it's right that it's not easy to connect the N64 on the V64, i don't even know if it's really connected when i do it

Yep, I think it looks like you haven't got that connector... check through the box and see if you didn't accidentally miss it and look around on the floor maybe you dropped it or put it to one side by mistake...
You can see the connection adaptor in this picture: http://www.dextrose.com/images/reviews/v64-dextrose/doc-iso.jpg
It's in the top of the V64. You must have this connection so the N64 can communicate with the V64. If you definitely don't have this connection then contact whoever you bought the V64 from and tell them you need it, otherwise maybe someone on here will have a spare one if they bought 2 units.
For boot cartridges: *MOST* games will work as long as you are using Mario64. I don't know if you have NTSC or PAL N64. I have NTSC and everything works fine with Mario 64 US... You don't need US and JAP, only one will do fine, because they are both NTSC cartridges and there's no difference with territory lock-out. If you're running a PAL system and want to play PAL games I think you need a PAL Mario cartridge also.
Summary:
PAL system: To boot PAL games, PAL Mario. To boot NTSC games, either US or JAP Mario is fine.
NTSC system: To boot anything, Mario US. I'm not sure about booting PAL games, for me some of them always worked fine with a US cartridge though I'm not sure that's true for all PAL games. I usually only get US versions so I'm not sure.
There are very few games that don't boot using Mario64.

VTG: I don't think a USA/JAP machine will boot anything on with a PAL bootcart. Similarly a PAL machine won't boot anything with a USA/JAP bootcart.
I live in the UK and have a JAP N64. I tried a PAL Podracer cart once and as far as I remember it was as useful as a Playstation game as a bootcart =\
That reminds me, I *still* need a US C&C cart, if anyone has a spare or knows where I can get one cheap it would be appreciated. Save me the hassle of ebay http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/wink.gif

do i really need the dx256 game saver between my n64 and the cartridge for play with the doctor64 ? what is this dx256 thing ? i fear that mine is broken... or i need a JAP N64 or cartridge, or US N64 or cartridge (mine is PAL)
When i just use my PAL N64 and a PAL cartridge that's ok, i can play, but when i use dx256 gamesaver between my N64 and cartridge i have only a black screen, does that mean my dx256 is broken ? or i need a PAL one ?
because of that i have my doctor64 since yesterday and i have not played again one game http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/frown.gif
(bluto, i search on the net on forum and i found an email of a guy who sale me my doctor64)

Sorry for the late reply but I didnīt check my mails for three days http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
The reason why your DX256/Dr.v doesnīt work is very simple: Your DX256 cartridge is modified and that means you canīt use it with your N64 only but need no longer the Passthrough adapter. Plug the DX right between your game and the Dr and everything should be fine. The manual you asked for can be found here at Dextrose or at Bungīs offical homepage.

the dx256 is only a big savechip which is dived in 256 pieces, but doesn't have a CIC chip or any other stuff so it needs a cartridge to give it those functions

I just recognized a small mistake I made above: So here is your final and correct installation: Dr.v ->N64 (Pal) ->DX256 ->game of choice (e.g. Super Mario).
The two red wheels you can see are to change to one of the 256 savebanks.

totron, i did exactly what you say, but when i loaded the game and that doctor64 say "now you can play the game", i have allways a black screen
may be i need a US N64 with US N64 cartridge, or a JAP one
but when i only use my N64 with dx256 i have also a blackscreen, so may be the dx256 is broken

As I allready mentioned Your DX256 is modified. You canīt use it just with your N64. I think itīs because of the rom. Which roms did you try to load? Try a Pal game first.

ok for the 256dx
but with doctor64 i only tried PAL cartrige, i used this one : diddky kong racing, roadster, revolt and perfect dark
(may be i am unlucky...)
PS : totron, when will you answer email i send to you ?

well i mean there is no PAL, JAP or NTSC V64, but only one that is compatible with all N64
