Hey Pascal,

I read your review of the DoctorV64, jr.
I still have some questions:

You said it takes 1 minute to load a 128mb
rom on a good pc --how good is good here?

When I read Bung's description of the unit, I was under the impression it was being marketed as a cartridge emulator type dev kit and couldn't backup cartridges.

Are you saying it can actually back up?
That slot isn't just for a dummy cart?
How long does it take to backup to a hd then?

Have a nice day!

Hi ,

1 What I meant with good PC was the following : in Bung advertising , they say it takes one minute ... I wanted to clearify that with my AMD 350 Mhz processor and 64Mb of ram , it was MORE than 1 minute !!

2 (like wih v64 in fact) and don't forget you need cracks also ... There is no direct play or such thing ... If bung insists a lot about coders , it is because it is the main target with such a product ... On back-up unit base the v64 jnr can't compete with a Z64 EVEN with such a low price ...

Pascal,

I'm still unsure about the Jr.'s ability to backup a cartidge to the hard drive so that it can be loaded later without the cart (purchased carts only of course!). Can the Jr. backup a cart? Also can it load all formats of files (V64, z64, cd64)?

Please help if you can.

Thanks,

Todd

I know I'm not pascal, but hey...

The doctor *can* back up from the cart. This functionality isn't in bung's software, but the DocJnr is able to do it - take a look at their technical specs.

The docjnr can load the rom image from any type of file because all of the decoding is done on the comp. side, and the raw data is transferred to the docjnr (or maybe direct to the N64 memory, since we're able to do that.)

So there you go. It would seem pretty trivial to make the docjnr backup a cart but you have to be able to program the parallel interface.

To make speculation stop,
yes the V64jr can be used to backup
cartridges.
Bung hasnt released any sources yet to
access this feature, but we think we did
figured it out on our own, so expect a
util to read out carts and transfer to pc
sooner or later.

[This message has been edited by pascal (edited 12-18-98).] You do not need cracks to play titles on the V64jr. You simply do not. All you need is the correct boot cart. You do not even need a DS1 because unlike the V64 it can save SRAM on an unmodified SRAM game cart.

Oh, and the other mentioned capabilities were unlocked by a couple utilities in the years since then ;) (Thnx Obsidian!)

cool, you must have a lot of spare time reading 5 year old topics :)

But thanks for keeping them up to date!
