Some do yes.
Usually because they didn't follow the instructions.

Geez...
Look, I'll tell you how to do it since it must have been too much trouble for you to read the .nfo file or instructs that came with the CZN patch:
Start with a fresh Zelda Rom, stale ones will not work.
Use RTool to check what format it is. Is it V64? If not, byte flip it to said format. This is hard for some people because you have to make sure to position the pointer over the 'Light Switch' Icon once the Rom you want to byte flip. Once you have the the pointer over the switch, click when you feel ready. Don't rush, take your time and do it right the first time.
Ok, so far so good. Take a deep breath and psych yourself up for the hard part...RUNNING THE PATCH! That's right, only a few steps away from playing Zelda. Run the patch like this:
CZN-ZZC1 ZELDA.V64
Where 'ZELDA.V64' is the Rom BYTEFLIPPED, ie in V64 format.
Strangely enough, the above is a DIRECT QUOTE from the patch. Hmmmm...
Hopefully, you have now managed to patch your Rom. Clean yourself up, change your shorts, get some oxygen, and let's go on to the last leg of our short journey. This is the big one...this is where we COPY THE ROM TO THE ZIP DISK! I am of course assuming that you have not been doing this whole operation to a Rom ON a Zip disk. If so, please find any sharp object and stab yourself as many times a spossible.
Ok, get your Zip drive up and online, get the pointer over the Zelda Rom file, hold the left mouse button and move your arm over...watch the screen! See! The file is moving! Quick, drag it to your Zip drive before it gets away!
Whew! Got it. When it's done copying, try it in your Z64. If at any time you become confused, try reading the instuctions that came with the patch, check out RTools, or get a 256 color Lite-Bright to play with.

I still tend to believe that if you have a HS-Version of Zelda, the whole shit won't work. They changed header and shit before releasing the rom.
That would at least explain the many people not able to play it ...

Yes, that and the fact that people don't do the patch from the DOS prompt. They do it from Explorer or ? and it has to all be done at the Dos prompt....sigh

The HS version of Zelda works absolutely fine. I even changed the header myself and tried again, still works. Problem is people don't know how to follow directions...

then what am i not doing i followed the directions word for word, is there any steps missing from the above post or the instructions in the patch, because thats what i used?? just wondering, the hs-version??? that one you got me on??
i did the byte flip, exited to dos to apply, and just black screen???
thanks if anyone knows where i am missing the boat on this!

HERE'S WHAT I DID:
1.Backed up Zelda cart on Z64.
2.The day it came out I downloaded the crack, unzipped files to C drive.
3.Copied ROM to C drive.
4.Used Rtool to byte flip. (initially did not, just named it zelda.v64 instead of 0001.rom)
5.Renamed zelda.BAK to zelda.v64 that might be where I fucked up, I'm not sure.(also tried patching the 0001.rom file)
6.Went to DOS prompt.
7.Oh yeah, "THIS IS THE HARD PART!" Typed C:\>czn-zzc1 zelda.v64
8.It goes through the routine, tells me patching's complete, still won't play.
So what is the problem? You really get the impression that it will play but the screen stays black. It's not the rom because first of all I have done this procedure with 2 different roms, and with the clean rom it will boot up and run for a couple of minutes or until you press the start button. Why don't people try to help the problem? Get more info on the situation before making sarcastic, dickhead remarks.
Thank You

the *.bak file is the Z rom not byteflipped.
Rtool makes a new file called zelda.v64 even if the old one is called zelda.rom and the old one is then called zelda.bak
That could be it?

It may be my host cart which is Mario Kart. I've tried a lot of shit. The only thing is that if I load an un-patched Zelda rom, it will start but it will beep and freeze after a while or if I press start. If I load the patched one in V64 format, the CZN intro starts. Once I press start to get to Zelda, the screen flickers for a second like it usually does when you load a rom, but like I said, the screen stays black. I might not be using Rtool right. I have Rtool 3. Here is what I do. Select the C drive, highlight the rom, click on the byteflip button. The progress bar appears. When it is finished, it does not make a .v64 file, it does however, say that it is in v64 format. Any more help is appriciated.

Okay, here is what you do.
1) Obtain CZN patch.
2) Load Zelda, and make a copy in your Z.
3) Transfer to Computer
4) With RTool, byte filp the file.
You should now have 001.rom in Doctor 64 format and 001.bak in Z64 format.
5) Rename 001.rom to Zelda64.v64
6) Run the Crazy nation patch against it.
7) It will now work. Copy back to Zip disk and go and play.

The problem Hectic and Kilroy are having is not that they are stupid or cannot follow directions. I had the same problem they do, and I assure you I know what I'm doing. Here is proof.
When I backup Zelda on my Z64 and then attempt to patch the rom with the Blackbag APS patcher and the 12/18/98 zelda64.aps patch, I receieve a message saying "Incorrect Image" and it will not patch. If I then Byte flip the rom to v64 format and try to apply the patch, it says "Wrong Image format". After recalculating the CRC, same problems as well. So as a last resort, I downloaded Zelda off the net and tried again. Low and behold, the copy I downloaded patches and runs just fine. But the copies that I backup on my Z64 will not patch with the aps patcher, and with the czn exe patch blackscreen after the intro just like the other two guys.
So there is proof that its probably not what they are doing, but something else indeed. I have a 2.11C z64. I wonder if this is a problem related just to v3.0 HW Z64s? Its obvious they can plauy the rom just fine, but they appear to have problems backing it up. Other 256mb games like turok 2 backup and play just fine.

Honestly, that rom only works if it's never been patched before and the checksum has not been changed.
How you can tell if it's never been patched before is beyond me.
Also, don't get the patches mixed up. There are two. The IPS and the APS.

Maybe you guys having problems downloaded a bad rom. With a 27MB zip file, it's very likely that you did if you resumed the download a couple times. Try renting the cart to get the ROM.

Velkrow, I had the same problem when I first used the APS patcher. All I did was retype the command (DOS of course) and changed the syntax (put .rom and .aps after filenames - maybe try with directories too ie. 'd:\rom\zelda.rom instead' of 'zelda'). and it may even be case sensitive. However I did get it to work after only a couple minutes of messing with it. I'm using a 2.11C and my boot cart is Mario 64.

kilroy,
I spend a shitload of time trying to find out what the problem was. I must have tried everything that I could. I now do have a working Zelda rom. It's funny that you post this today, because it was today when I got the rom. NuMaTic who goes to my school hooked me up with one he downloaded. It is APS-patched. I had the same problems as Velkrow did with the Blackbag APS patcher. I really did not mess with that very much. Tried re-naming the *.aps to *.ips and the yellow line still appeared and then it would crash.
Tell you what, e-mail me with your home address(I hope you live in the US)and I will send you a CD with the rom because I know how it feels to want the rom, your collection does not really feel complete without it, does it? E-mail me at lokbox@aol.com with your address and I will send you the CD with the rom. Maybe you could trade me a rom, type a list of all your roms maybe you could e-mail it to me. No matter what, I will send you the rom.

Hey guys .. I think I have a good explanation for all these Zelda fuss ... I talked to a guy in Softidea in length plus my own experiments so I think I have a good clue here ... correct me if I am wrong...
I have not tried Oxygen's direct APS patching yet so I am not sure if that would change the fact or not ... but the issue should be ...
ZELDA 64 CARTRIDGE !! (due to the way that Z64 is normally backing up cart ...)
Super_Jeff mentioned too that this needs to be a frash cartridge. Softidea said so and my experiment proved that it's true. If I have save data in my zelda, no matter how I patched it (except direct APS patch as mentioned above), it just would not work.
a backup of clean Zelda, without byte flipping but renamed it to zelda.rom or zelda64.rom, will work with z64patch.dat (which has zelda.aps inside and Z64 will patch memory correctly for us.) of course to use czn-zzc1.exe, the .ROM needs to be flipped to .V64 format first.
so looks like Zelda might have relocated memory addresses (with the use of its own flash ROM or SRAM) if there are saved data and therefore confuses Z64 ... can anyone prove this?
oo.. yeah, what is HS version cartridge?
Softidea also says that some users reported that they cannot play Zelda cartridge directly on top of Z64, does any one have this problem? I have a HW2 and I do not have such problem.

Does High Society's dump work? Was it a dump of a 'fresh' cart?
Pete
Tue 19 Jan 1999, 19:40
Everyone is talking about a "fresh" cartridge. Here is my question, If I rented a cartridge from Blockbuster, stuck it in my Nintendo and toggled the power switch back and forth repeatedly, would that clear the memory. Would a magnet do the trick?
Also, has anybody ever rented a cartridge, opened it up, switch the insides with that of some bad game that they own? If so, where do you get that screwdriver?
