I was totally blown away by the quality this year!

I haven't gone thru them all yet but am very impressed with Destop's "Vector Demo", "POMolizer" by Protest Design, "Spacer" by Memir (great 80's music soundtrack!) and of course the PCE Emulator!

I am sure I will be amazed by the rest of them once I get around to checking them out all the way thru (got to go to school tonight, ack!).

Sorry for posting again, but I just had to say that Kid Stardust's demo is my current fave. I mean, it's got everything, hi-res graphics, cool "fire scrolly", killer soundtrack, etc.

Why the hell would you lend out a $400 piece of equipment? Whenever anyone asks to borrow my Z, I just laugh.

And they frown

Ha!

Just finish the three levels - the 'cart' turns gold and you get a new option on the option screen.

BTW, in minesweeper, even if you find where all the mines are nothing happens.

What I want to know is who actually did the tesko entry?

I sent a congratulatory email to the uk-scene mailing list for them representing the UK scene on the n64 and suddenly I was flodded with replied from the members demanding to know who did it? They seem to see it as some sort of theft, personally i've always been a believer in immitation being the highest form of flattery...

That Barney game should have won. The demos are pretty fresh but you can actually play Barney. Its hella' original too. The Spacer game is nice also.

I've personally always wanted to blast some buckshots at that stupid purple dinosaur anyways.

I felt the ranking of the POM entries was a little unjust! Firstly the N64 is a games console, hence the most credit should be given to game coders. POM, this year seemed to turn a blind eye to this. I felt games such as Berney and ESPECIALLY 'Spacer' by Memir should have been given more merit. I think spacer was by far the best POM entry!!
What's going on with the Judges? How could it be given 6th place?!!!!!

Wed 28 Apr 1999, 16:59
I totally agree Argonaut!! Spacer beats the fuck out of most commercial games!!! how the hell did Immo take first?!^Ģ"% something is very dodgy here. the results are bloody fixed. this is so obvious, does anyone else agree?????????????????????????????????

Regardless if the N64 is a game-console or not...POM is called a "N64-Demo-Competition"

That doesn't mean that demos are considered better then games...but neither is it the other way...
I won't discuss the judgement here...it's like it is...I just didn't like this "game-console-statement"

Since it's difficult to compare between those two generes, making two categorys would have been better. But that's to late now and maybe we can improve that for the next compo...

Dudes, calm down.

The system was as follows:

6 Judges give 6 x Top19 which are counted together .. we have not discussed the various votings to make it as UNBIASED as possible.

Someone had Spacer on rank #1 by the way, others below #10 .. opinions differ, and actually that is the point about judging !

Some people look at the Code (has a devkit been used ? etc), again others look for the feeling of the entry, and then again there are people who look into the design (how good do the parts fit together, is it getting boring,etc...).

Also consider judges had to vote for games, demos and utilities. Its very hard to
do this and still remain as fair as possible.

If we have enough entries in each categories next year we will have different sections and appropriate prizes of course.

I think its not really helpful to call the judges blind.

You can express your opinion through the public poll by the way ! And if the possibility of fraud would not be that high, we would do a public poll only, but you know, there are always idiots who think its cool to press the button 50x especially when the result does reflect the prize-rankings.

Stay cool. I think we had really unbelievable great Entries, and i wish it will be even better next year.

If security issues are solved in 12 months i won't mind to have a public poll only.

I agree... Spacer is my favorite ROM from POM 99. This years games are 10x better than last years. While my favorite demos this year were Money Creates Taste and Wet Dreams, I still like Nintro64 by Split from last year more.

I didn't see anyone mentioning the Analog test util much, but I really find this usefull (not to mention a beautiful menu design). The controller in the 1p slot was much worse than the ones in the 3 and 4 slots, so I now know to rotate them once in awhile. Another thing to do to preserve your controller (although your friends may question your sanity) is put vaseline all around the analog stick to keep it from rubbing up on the plastic. That white film you see in the crevices under the analog stick now is plastic that has slowly worn off.

oop, got a little sidetrack there... http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif Anyway, entries from POM '99 are all excellent (makes me jealous that I can't code worth shit) and I hope someone from big N will give them a look, cause these guys definetly have futures in the industry.

I already had a talk with HotBlack yesterday night about this very subject.
Actually i believe the judging was biased this year (in contrary to what was said before in this forum).
Did anyone notice what Kid had done with the firescroller ???? This thingy with its combining texture mapping would alone have placed him higher in the rankings if there would have been the aforementioned unbiased judgement. I always thought demos are about technique and style. Knowing that Kids demo lacks good graphics there is of course no chance to win the "best look" award, but (sorry, donīt take it personal immo, i always respected you) where is the technique and style in wet dreams ?????????
Most people will think my very own opinion is itself not unbiased since i know Kid so well, but thatīs not true. My very own favourite this year was "Spacer" directly followed by the PCE-emu. Spacer has style (this heli thing is really cool, just as the bee. very "consolic"), and certainly more technique than e.g. POMolizer. 3rd place in my rankings is POMbaer.
Kid asked me weeks before if iīd join him to do a demo for POM and i always refused due to lack of time and lost interest in "scene stuff". Watching the demos over and over again i donīt regret my decision not to write a single line of code, since i donīt have to be angry about the judging now.
This is only MY very OWN opinion, i wonīt kill people if they donīt share it, but it was asked for feedback and here is mine.
Regards,
rene_

Oh, i forgot to give a comment to Sub_Ubiīs posting:
Sorry pal, but those guys will definetely not have a chance in the industry, at least not with the things given as POM entry (well, at least i would have had no chance with this http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif.

Well, maybe 1-3 of them already had their chance (and still have), hehe http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Don't you mistake biased with subjective opinion?

Believe me, if the judgement would have been based on friendship and sympathie, you would be MUCH more irritated

But maybe we simply should stop this discussion (which won't take us anywhere).
It's like it is and I'm really curious to see the public voting

actraiser_old

Rene, look,

Nobody is biased since EVERYONE was up to DECIDE HIMSELF without any other how he arranged the Demos in his Top19.

It's actually ridiculous, since there is no
reason and also no POSSIBILTY for us to prefer for exampke Immo+Destop since we are 6 independant people.
You could say that every single judge was brided though or something .. i mean, hey, wtf ? http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif You should realize that this cant be true, we are not the kind of people ripping off really....

You are Kid Stardust's friend and took a close look at the code and realize the great effects he did. Someone else says that the demo is boring to watch, you know what i mean. It depends on the point of view, always. You cant be really objective here.

And i really cant help that one judge rates Memir's Entry #16 and another #1. That are two TOTALLY different opinions. But thats exactly why we used more judges than last year, to have a broad reflection.
We probably need 20 judges next time, huh ? http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif
That probably would results into the fact that the demos are even earlier spreaded around ...

From the public poll though we can see which of the six judges did have the most similiar opinion to the folks out there and can consider doing changes for next year.

Again, #5, #9, hell, even #15 says not that a entry is crap ! I love them all, even JL's Simon. Of course some seem unfinished and others would probably not compete in a PC-Compo, but hey, this is a N64-Competition with only a very few coders in the scene. Every effort is appreciated and hell, i love the entries and was IMPRESSED by the great quality especially when it comes to the Newcomers in N64-Coding.

And every judgement will have its controversy. Probably it was easier last year since we had only 10 entries and the quality was a bit easier to distinguish.

People, I love Pom99, every piece of it. I watch Destops entry as often as i play Barney must die. It doesnt make difference for me if in the final results the difference in ranks are like 10 places.

I enjoy it, I respect the coders and they are worth every single effort we put into organizing the whole thing.

Last thing, did you realize we do a Public Poll ? I will have that running a week. After that I post both lists again, judges+public and then coders see what the masses think and if lets say PC-Engine is #1, hell, that is great then, and a big success though they werent #1 in the official rankings.

I always heard in the beginning that coders did majorly code for the competition and not for the prizes. And we give them the competition TWICE. First, impressing judges, secondly, impress the masses.

Every coder can decide himself which Top19 he will like more at the end, cant he ? http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

I suppose I should have something to add to this discussion since I was the main Coder behind Spacer.

In my opinion I thought spacer should've won aswell, but the rankings are final.....

But Memir is NOT:

Look out for more memir productions in the upcoming weeks.....

We'll guarantee some more FUN for all N64 sceners out there!!!!

btw: If you have any game design ideas for Spacer or If you would like to see a Really cool Game for the N64 then contact us by E-mail:

Nomatter how POM99 had turned out, people would have reacted against it.
Had the games won, demopeople would have been screaming that its a democompetition. Had the demos won (as they did), people would have/are screaming that its a games machine.

I myself do not agree on all the positions, but i also respect that people have individual taste, and that just because i think something is good, it doesnt mean everyone else does.

One important thing though in my opinion is to clearly point out WHAT POM is. I see POM as what i understand by a demo competition. A chance for coders to do cool effects and routines aimed to please the eye and the ears.

Some people (i could easily be persuaded to call them lamers, but i wont) never experienced a demo competition on any platform, and therefor think POM is all about sucking up to people watching the production (read: give them something (games!) to help them pass their lives). In my opinion, thats not the ultimate goal of POM.

Dont get me wrong - I have the greatest respect for people doing games for POM .. I actually thought the games were the best entries in POM - BUT - I still think demos are generally better entries to submit to POM than games.

Let me ALSO remind people that though (some) games provide more fun for the viewer than demos, that does NOT mean games were harder to do than the demos. Demos focus on display, games on interaction.

Actraiser; maybe you should consider the ONE good thing that came out of Summer98; Two different type of submissions; demos and games. Maybe its time to split things up?

Steve--

colin phillips
Thu 29 Apr 1999, 13:17
I agree with Steve POM2k should be split up into two or maybe 3 devisions:

1) Intros
2) Games
3) Tools/Misc

btw: Spacer was (8000+ lines) but we also gained Tonz of tools and experience in the short time that we've had the Devkit - nearly 4 weeks)

to name a few, "3ds2c", "3ds2m3d", "GetFont", our MODPLAYER!!! built up a strong library of 3d Detection functions "game_checkvert(..);" <-- coolest function checks whether you've Crashed or NOT

I think people should look more at the Positive side of POM99:

19+ new roms to add to the .V64 library of ****!!!
Another Intro as been released by Renderman.
Dextrose feels more active than ever before.

so let's hope that this isn't the LAST POM competition but just the beginning of many more competitions on the .net!!!!!!!!!!!

POM'99 has been Cool and so should You!!!!

Act: I noticed that '*'s occured where I wrote [18,15,13,26] convert to alpha. Is that a forbidden word on dextrose?

Collin, as i said, if we have enough entries in each category (and actually we had already enough this year) we split the whole thing up next time.
Mistakes happen to do better next time, right ? http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

And the word is not really forbidden, but in the beginning it was sort of joke to censor "roms with z at the end". Never removed it from the ban-list ever since. http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Next year, we will then have to try to get 2 major prizes for Demos+Games as well then.

Well.. i think that this years POM went well.. lots of entries.. lots of stuff to check out.. games.. demos.. even a controller stick tester.. WOW!!.. I know ppl have their own opinions.. and not everyone likes this game/demo or that.. I'm not going to start any new debates on which i thought were the coolest.. but what i do want to point out is..

N64 Scene is not DEAD!!!

If this is what i can look forward to next year.. bring them on.. maybe even try a lil myself.. hell who knows.. but ever since the n64 emu was released.. the scene seemed to go further underground.. It is nice to see that there are more coders out there still keeping the scene alive.. Dextrose still bringing up new info and files everyday.. more and more web sites joining the ranks to keep the N64 scene alive.. i love it.. keep up the good work.. now bring on a patcher for PC Engine emu.. heh.. gotta love the ole NEC PC engine/duo games.. shooters especially..
anyways..

Keep the scene alive!! http://www.dextrose.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah. For what its worth (not v. much) I agree with Act. The POM99 releases were so much better than the 98 ones that I've got very high hopes for POMY2K.

In a hippie/idealistic world view, everyone would work together and produce a game that is so good that the big N would have to be a little more generous with their DEvKit allocation. That'd be cool.
